EA's Importance:
Global competition and the recent financial crisis have caused organizations of all types to look for ways to become more efficient, effective and agile. More and more organizations are looking at enterprise architecture as the discipline needed to achieve these long term organizational transformations.
Therefore, enterprise architecture is becoming an area of increasing importance in organizations of all types over the next five years. Actually, there are little programs which really look at larger organizations' issues and strategic issues around enterprise technology.
If you look at academia, technology-related programs are typically two types. At
one end of the spectrum, you have MIS programs which in many cases it is said
somewhat dated, business-heavy technology like. The other end of the spectrum
have traditional computer science programs which software and system development
oriented. Another in the middle, we do have IT programs that many started during
the dotcom boom. They tend to be skill-oriented and certification-oriented.
That's why many
see Enterprise architecture as a possible future for MIS programs in academia.
My involvement in EA
My initial involvement in EA was in 2006 during the time I worked part time in
ePeyk. After having accepted into the firm, I passed a one-month
introductory class in Enterprise Architecture. Then, I worked in two EA projects
sequently.
Job Experience in EA
I've worked for 1.5 years in EA projects. It's worthwhile to mention that
during the project, I obtained great expriences:
- EA is really powerful in finding business process problems. Customers were
astonished finding that after 2-3 months, we knew their organizations better
than themselves. You should've seen their faces while we were enumerating their
organizaations' problems; some of them hadn't been evinced by then.
- There is a huge demand for EA professionals. This even became a threat to the EA
projects because almost all our customers tried to poach our project members.
- It is really difficult to convince senior managers (CEO ,CIO, ...) to adopt or
continue EA projects because their results wouldn't be revealed in the short run.
It's even hard to evaluate the results of EA projects and we really had problem
in showing positive effects of EA on the customers' conditions.
Research Efforts in EA
During the time in ePeyk, I had to choose a title for my master's
thesis. I
decided to choose "A Framework for Measuring ROI of Enterprise Architecture"
to find a solution for the third aformentioned problem. Therefore, I studied all the articles I had
found in Elsevier, Emerald, etc. But, I couldn't find enough experts and also a
proper advisor to continue with that. As a result, I had to choose a title in IT
Public Policy which is my second area of interest.
However, I didn't get disappointed. I proposed "A Methodology for Developing a Master Plan for Integrating e-Government Information Systems" based on EA principles. Besides, currently, I am working on "e-Government Integration value measurement" with two students of mine. I have, also, planned to work on
Enterprise Architecture Body of Knowledge (EABOK) which is a panoply of my research interests and also important to the future of information systems field of study because many see Enterprise Architecture as a possible future for MIS programs in academia. I,
also, continually study books, articles, and projects in Enterprise Architure area.
Teaching Efforts in EA
I've lectured for 5 semesters various EA topics such as Zachman Framework,
DODAF/C4ISR, FEA, EAP, Business Modeling, Data Architecture, Application
Architecture, Technology Architecture, ... under the name of
IT Strategic Planning at MUST. I've used
these references for that class:
- Finkelstein, Enterprise Architecture for Integration: Rapid Delivery Methods and Technologies,2006
- Spewak, Enterprise
Architecture Planning: Developing a blueprint for Data, Applications, and Technology, 1993
- David, F. R. ,
Strategic Management Concepts and Cases, 2004
- Golsoft.com, Persian Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO), IT Master Plan and Enterprise Architecture,
2005
EA Frameworks/Methodologies:
I'm familiar with the below frameworks/methodologies:
- Enterprise Architecture Frameworks/Methodologies: Zachman Framework, DoDAF, EAP
, FEA, ...
- Software Analysis & Design Methodologies: RUP, BPM, SOA, OO , Realtional
Database Design, ...
Publications (based on EA):
- Khodabandeh Amiri, A., Naderseresht, N., Ramezani Chemazi, M., Taheri, A. (2010), "A Methodology for Developing a Master Plan for Integrating e-Government Information Systems", The 4th National Conference on Management of Technology (IRAMOT 2010), November 8-9, 2010. Teheran, Iran. [sent to
